Alerts are sent to NHS COVID-19 app users who have been in ‘close contact’ with someone who has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19). Read more about these contact tracing alerts.

The app is anonymous and voluntary. This means that contact tracers do not know whether someone who tests positive is an app user or whether the contacts they identify are app users.

Therefore, contacts who have been notified by the app may also be notified by contact tracers. The app will usually be quicker to notify people as the process is automated.

33,551 contact tracing alerts were sent to app users in England between 11 February and 17 February 2021. This brings the total number of contact tracing alerts in England to 1,764,520.

849 contact tracing alerts were sent to app users in Wales between 11 February and 17 February 2021. This brings the total number of contact tracing alerts in Wales to 63,235.
