The NHS COVID-19 app has been designed with privacy at its core. This privacy protection applies to businesses, as well as app users.

If an app user tests positive for coronavirus (COVID-19), they can choose to share this anonymously in the app. This will then alert other app users who they’ve recently been in ‘close contact’ with. These alerts will never identify someone.

Likewise, if a venue has cases of coronavirus, an alert may be sent to app users who have checked into that venue recently. These alerts will never identify the venue. Read more about how it's decided whether someone gets an alert.
