The NHS COVID-19 app has been developed with a commitment to transparency, ethics and the law.
We have been discussing the app with the Information Commissioner and Members of the National Data Guardian’s Panel as well as a wide range of privacy experts.
We have also used the advice provided by the Ethics Advisory Group for the app, chaired by Professor Sir Jonathan Montgomery from University College London, during the development of the app. This group was formed and met in the spring of 2020 and ceased to meet in July. It identified key ethical issues and a trust matrix for the development of contact tracing apps and these were a reference point throughout the app’s development.
You can read the final report of the Ethics Advisory Group on the NHS COVID-19 app here. This report includes all its key advice to government on contact tracing apps.
